Building a Shed Floor

Do I need to use Pressure Treated wood for my shed floor?

Using pressure treated wood for any wood that touches the ground is a must. It’s not a bad idea to use it for other wood used for the floor too, particularly in wet environments.

Shed floor skids

Space the skids apart on the gravel evenly for the dimensions of the shed.

Shed floor joist framing

Place the joists and nail the joists together (resting on the skids) through the ends using 3-3.5” framing nails – 2 nails in each end should be adequate.

Do I connect my shed skids to the floor joists?

I prefer to have them connected so when I need to make final adjustments before building walls, it moves as one unit. You can use hurricane ties at every-other skid/joist connection (or all of them if you prefer) to connect the pieces all together.

Level your shed floor

Although difficult at this point, this is your last chance you might have any hope of making leveling adjustments by adjusting the gravel it’s sitting on. A level shed will make the rest of the build much easier.

Square your shed floor

*Before attaching floor panels*, measure across opposite corners diagonally and make adjustments until the two diagonals are equal. Adjust as necessary.

Attach shed floor panels

The 4’ x 8’ floor panels should ideally be attached so the long dimension of the panel (the side with the tongue & groove if you’re using that type of wood) is running perpendicular to the floor joists. The short ends of the panels should butt up together on top of a joist to support both.

Tongue and groove floor panels overhang

If you use tongue-and-groove boards, you may have to trim off any overhang on the end as the tongue and groove connections often leave a bit of extra length and don’t always result in a perfect 4-foot-multiples connection.

Staggered shed floor joints

With each new row of floor panel, stagger the joints. You’ll need to cut floor panels in half and arrange them like the diagrams here.

Attach shed floor panels

Nail the floor panels to the joists.
